Peak were approached by a major Operating company with a potential hydrocarbon leak path to the ocean via a leak from the flow wing of a 5" Subsea Tree. Whilst the Subsea Tree was closed there was no immediate threat to the environment. However, to perform a successful tree recovery, access to the wellbore was required to either kill the well or install mechanical barriers. A new Subsea Tree could then be deployed and the well returned to production.
Our client requested that we propose a solution that prevented killing of the well and potentially damaging the sensitive formation. The solution Peak proposed had to guarantee safety to all personnel involved with the utmost consideration to the environment. The target objective was to design, manufacture and fully test a dual sealing 5" OD Straddle, to be conveyed and set with slickline above the closed master valve within the bore of the subsea tree. The internal diameter of the straddle had to be sufficient enough to enable an inflatable plug to pass through once the flow wing was isolated and the master valve opened to allow access to the well bore.
In depth conceptual designs were discussed with the client and the final concept finally agreed. The Peak design team had a timeframe of 5 weeks to deliver an engineered solution to meet the allocated rig schedule. The equipment was designed and manufactured, surface tests conducted successfully all within the timeframe. The Straddle was mobilised in time for operations along with a Peak Technician to prepare the equipment and oversee the conveyance.
The Straddle was set in place and isolated the flow wing effectively. The master valve of the subsea tree was then opened and an inflatable plug conveyed through the bore of the Peak straddle and set to isolate the well bore.
The operation was a success. An effective solution was supplied on time & performed successfully with zero harm to personnel or the environment. With a new Subsea Tree installed and tested, the well was returned to production.
