Continued SIM Lock Success

Date: 29/04/10

During April Peak successfully deployed a number of SIM Lock Retrievable Bridge Plugs for 4 major clients in the Asia Pacific region. The ongoing success of this patented technology continues to demonstrate the reliability and flexibility of the SIM System range of products.

In Indonesia Peak set two 3 1/2" SIM Plugs in two separate land wells for VICO. Both operations were part of an evaluation of the Peak SIM System range of tools by VICO. The first operation was to shut-off water which was successfully achieved with a slickline conveyed SIM Plug set at 2600 feet, resulting in a significant increase in oil production. The second operation successfully secured a well with a Plug set 9,400 feet. In comparison to previously used systems, the minimal runs required to deploy & recover the SIM Plug resulted in significant time & cost savings for the client.

In Western Australia a 3 1/2" SIM Plug was run for Origin Energy to isolate a well at the tailpipe, below a production packer and above an X-Nipple profile. The Plug was successfully set with a depth control of +/- 2 feet. The SIM Plug provided a mechanical barrier which secured the well prior to a Workover.

Also in Western Australia, two 4 1/2" SIM Plugs were run in a single well to investigate a leak in the multi-gaslift configured tubing string. A deep-set SIM Plug was first deployed to isolate the tubing and provide a testing platform. As the SIM Lock requires no nipple profile, integrity tests can be performed up the tubing string at precise, pin-pointed intervals. A leaking side-pocket mandrel was successfully located allowing remedial slickline action to repair the leaking valve. The client obtained the required information while saving time against previous investigation processes. Peak have developed a Mechanical Leak Detection tool which is a simple adaptation to the SIM Lock Running Tool. This will allow unlimited setting and un-setting of the Leak Detection tool further speeding up leak path identification.

In Brunei a 3 1/2" SIM Plug was set to provide well integrity. On a newly completed well the TRSCSSV failed on testing. The SIM Plug and Prong were set just above the TRSCSSV but below the sea bed until a lock out could be performed. The SIM Plug was set on slickline and successfully inflow tested. The plug was successfully recovered weeks later.

Also in Brunei a 3 1/2" SIM Lock was shallow set to act as a primary barrier prior to changing out the Master and Swab Valve gates prior to coiled tubing fishing operations. The well had a significant amount of valve grease inside the tubing and multiple scratcher runs were done prior to conveying the Plug on slickline. The Peak SIM Plug set and tested first time and was recovered later without incident.

The continued success of the SIM System is providing clients with a range of quick solutions to a range of well problems. Further developments of the SIM range of products including the Mechanical Leak Detection Tool and Permanent Plug will further extend the operational envelope of the Peak SIM System.
